Why You Need a Persistent Linux USB
A standard "Live USB" lets you test an operating system, but it forgets everything the moment you reboot. A Persistent USB changes the game by allocating a dedicated storage space (like a miniature hard drive) on your flash drive.
Here’s why it’s a must-have tool:
Ultimate Portability: Carry your entire, customized OS and all your files in your pocket.
Security & Privacy: Use a known-good, secure operating system for sensitive tasks like banking, no matter which public or friend’s computer you're on.
Troubleshooting: Use it as a powerful recovery and diagnostic tool for other PCs.
No Installation Required: Run a powerful OS without ever touching the internal hard drive of the host machine.
What You'll Need
This method is quick and uses a single, free utility on a Windows PC.
A USB Flash Drive (8GB minimum; 16GB or 32GB recommended for more persistence space).
The Linux Mint 21.2 ISO file (Download the Cinnamon edition from the official Linux Mint website).
The free, portable utility Rufus.
Step-by-Step Guide: Creating Your Persistent USB
This entire process can be completed in just a few minutes using the Rufus tool.
1. Configure the Rufus Utility
Launch Rufus: Run the application.
Select Device: In the Device dropdown, select your USB flash drive.
WARNING: All data on this drive will be erased!
Select the ISO: Click SELECT and choose the Linux Mint 21.2 ISO file you downloaded.
2. The Key to Persistence
This is the most important step! Once you select the ISO, a slider will appear in the Rufus window:
Persistence Size: Drag the slider to allocate storage space for saving your data.
We recommend allocating at least 4GB or more depending on the size of your USB drive. The more space you allocate here, the more files you can save and applications you can install.
Review Settings: Leave all other options (Partition scheme, File system, etc.) at their default recommended settings for best compatibility.
3. Write and Finish
Click the START button.
Confirm any warnings that pop up. Rufus will now format the USB, write the Linux Mint operating system, and create the special partition for your persistent data.
Wait for the process to complete (the status bar will show "READY").
Final Step: Booting and Testing Persistence
Reboot your computer with the new USB drive still plugged in.
During startup, press the key to open your Boot Menu (This is often F12, F9, F2, or Esc—check your PC or laptop manufacturer's documentation).
Select the USB drive from the boot list.
Once Linux Mint loads to the desktop, create a file (e.g., a text document named "Test") and place it on the desktop.
Shut down the system completely.
Boot from the USB drive again.
If your file is still on the desktop, you did it! You now have your own powerful, portable, and persistent Linux Mint OS.
